London 2012
Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony to every Olympics becomes more elaborate and impressive every year. Host countries love the chance to show off their culture, as well as the talent of their citizens. As well as singers, dancers, athletes, and celebrities, opening ceremonies in successive years have featured more and more fireworks, light shows, robotics, and after Beijing 2008 and Vancouver 2010, London 2012 has some major acts to follow.

While details of the London 2012 opening ceremony have yet to be made public, it's almost certain that London will make an effort to show up China and Canada, whose opening ceremonies drew admiration from around the world. At Beijing, Chinese history and culture was celebrated in an ceremony filled with dance and traditional costume directed by Zhang Yimou (famous for films like House of Flying Daggers), and in Vancouver, dancing lumberjacks, a traditional native blessing ceremony, and music from acclaimed singer kd lang made audiences worldwide think seriously about getting some warm clothes and renewing their passports for a trip North.

With one in three people worldwide watching, the London 2012 opening ceremonies are an unprecedented chance for the UK to showcase its art, culture, and diversity and the organizers are well aware. They're drawing on the best minds in the UK to produce an absolutely exceptional event, and one which, to witness in person, would be a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

    Archery
    Image : morethanthegames.co.uk
Archery is one of the most iconic events of the Summer Games. The sport, which requires a mixture of strength, skill, and raw talent, has been thrilling audiences since its debut in the 1900 Olympic Games. In the century since, archery was not an official sport between 1920 and 1972. When Olympic organizers came to their senses, the sport took off once again and saw, among other exciting events, the debut of the first paraplegic competitor in the Olympic Games. Olympic archery only allows competition with the recurve bow. There are several events, divided by gender, though all revolve around the same basic goal of attempting to hit a target with an arrow fired from a distance. Since 1972, the sport has been dominated by South Korea, which has won an impressive 13 gold medals.

    Badminton
    Image : eventfulstays
Badminton has been played in gym class, at picnics, and in backyards for ages. Many know the game as an easier, more approachable version of tennis: a game to be played with families for an afternoon of outdoor (or, if a gym is available, indoor) fun. They'd be surprised to see the game played at the Olympic level: world-class athletes competing in an intense tournament full of hard-hitting action and incredible saves. Olympic badminton is played in a single-elimination tournament: once a player is out, they're out for good. This adds to the intensity of the matches, which are played to the best of three 21-point games. With the 2012 Olympic Games coming up, sports lovers the world over will have a chance to see some of the most frenetic, joyful, and skilled competition of the Olympics in the sport of badminton.

    Boxing
    Image : Dailymail.co.uk
Olympic boxing has taken place since the 1904 Games in St Louis. While much in the world has changed since then, the sport has remained essentially the same: two combatants in the same weight class enter a ring and punch each other until one is knocked out or until judges award a technical victory to one contestant. Certain rules are in place to avoid undue injury, and some protective gear is worn; nonetheless, serious injuries are commonplace. Matches are won on a combination of strength, reach, skill, and endurance. The 2012 summer games will see the introduction of women's boxing for the first time since the sport's introduction in 1904.

    Cycling
    Image : telegraph.co.uk
As rock band Queen sang decades ago: "I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike." Unlike sports such as shot put or the biathlon, bicycling is enjoyed by literally billions of people worldwide, from small children on pink Huffies with matching training wheels to grandmothers cycling back from the village square with a baguette and some fresh tomatoes in their bag. The sport of Olympic cycling sees this universally enjoyed mode of transportation elevated to the world stage: Olympic cyclists take what is essentially the same machine as that little girl's Huffy or that grandmother's Peugot and transform it into a pedal-powered drag racing blur of color and excitement whooshing past at breakneck speed. Olympic cycling events are separated by gender, and include such categories as road bicycle racing, mountain biking, track cycling, and (as of 2008) BMX. No matter which category piques one's interest, Olympic cycling is a recipe for speed, drama, and excitement.

    Equestrian
    Image : lehighvalleylive.com
Equestrian events are those involving the riding of domesticated horses, a sport which has captured the imagination of fans for thousands of years. At the Olympics, equestrianism is limited to dressage, show jumping, and eventing (a mixture of the first two with cross-country jumping). Equestrian events have been held at the Summer Olympics since 1900, and (along with one event in the Modern Pentathlon) are the only events in the Olympics to involve animals. England is one of the centers of equestrianism, and the 2012 Olympics will no doubt see an impressive array of competitors, a wide audience, and a spectacular selection of some of the world's most majestic animals.

    Field Hockey
    Image : fieldhockeyforum
Field Hockey is the Summer Games equivalent of regular (ice) hockey. Rather than skating across an ice surface, players simply run across grass (as of 1976, the grass is actually AstroTurf) while attempting to shoot a ball into the opposing team's goal. While field hockey doesn't have quite the same fanatical following as ice hockey, it is nonetheless an exciting game with a devoted following.
Both men's and women's Olympic field hockey is played. Interestingly, major nations such as China, Japan, Russia, Germany, and the United States have yet to win a gold medal in the sport, while India has eight.

    Handball
    Image : london2012.com
Olympic handball is a team sport played at the Summer Games. The game, in which two teams of seven compete to throw a ball into the opponent's goal, is exciting, fast-past, and often gets physical.
Handball is somewhat like a cross between soccer, hockey, and basketball. While players must dribble the ball at points, they are given greater leeway than basketball players, being allowed to travel up to three steps or hold the ball for up to three seconds. The rules make the game exhilarating to watch, and handball fans worldwide eagerly await the Summer Games in order to cheer on their favorite teams.

    The modern pentathlon
    Image : .BBC.co.uk
Olympic Modern Pentathlon is one of the most challenging events in the Summer Olympics. Participants must run, swim, shoot targets, fence, and ride horses. Widely popular in Eastern Europe, it is also followed by a core group of enthusiasts in other countries who love the sport for the immense versatility it demands of its athletes, as well as for the variety it provides spectators. The modern pentathlon is patterned after the classical one, an integral part of the classical Olympics (it is no wonder, then, that the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, is also the inventor of the modern pentathlon). In ancient Greece, athletes would race on foot, throw a javelin, do the long jump, throw a discus, and wrestle. While the contemporary Olympics features a number of events from the Classical pentathlon, these generally take place under the aegis of the Track and Field category and do not require athletes to become proficient in multiple areas, a fact which makes modern pentathlon fans uniquely excited about their sport.

    Sailing
    Image : telegraph.co.uk
Olympic sailing, in the 2008 games, belonged entirely to the Brits, who swept the events with four gold medals. 2012, then, will doubtlessly see a furious competition in this category: the UK team, boldened by their victories, will be trying to do better while on their home turf, while the rest of the world will be desperately trying to make up for their trouncing at Beijing. Every team will have spent the past four years training nonstop, and summer 2012 will see an incredible series of races by athletes at the absolute top of their game. Olympic sailing currently consists of eleven categories, four in each gender and three open to either. Sailors take the helm of small boats: sailboards, Lasers, 470s, Starboats (Ynglings for the women's event), and in the open categories, Finns, 49ers, and Tornadoes. Sailing fans worldwide thrill at the immense level of skill displayed at the Olympic level, and the small size of the craft (compared to that in many non-Olympic sailing events) makes the sailors' athleticism and individual talent far more evident in these races.

    Summer Olympics 2012 London
    Soccer
    Image :soccer-magazine
Soccer, the "beautiful game," is one of the most widely-played and wildly-loved sports in the world. From Brazil to Korea, "association football" (as it is formally known) has an immense following, with fans' relationship with their footie team often becoming as important to them as their career, friends, or family. Due to technicalities with the organization running the World Cup, the UK has, in recent years, declined to enter a football team in the Summer Olympics. With excitement about the 2012 Summer Games coming to a boiling point, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish football officials finally gave the all-clear to enter a UK team in the Olympics (provided it consists entirely of English players so as not to jeopardize the separation between the English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish football associations). Olympic soccer is played in a similar manner to FIFA soccer: two teams, each consisting of eleven players, attempt to kick a spherical ball into the opposing team's goal. Scores are generally low, but enthusiasts are still wild about the drama and progression of the game. While professional players were allowed to join Olympic teams starting in 1992, those playing in an Olympic match can't have played in a World Cup before (this rule was a compromise between the IOC and FIFA to keep interest in the World Cup high).

    Synchronized Swimming
    Image : Eventfulstays
Synchronized Swimming looks like dancing at first, and in many ways, it's similar. To the casual observer, it's a beautiful piece of entertainment. Dedicated fans, however, see the work that goes into a piece: the powerfully trained muscles, the years of work, the intense cooperation. From its beginnings in the ornamental water ballets of the past, Synchronized Swimming has come to symbolize the beauty and grace inherent in the Games. For 2012, both Synchronized Swimming events will take place at the Aquatics Centre. Like the Rhythmic Gymnastics event, Synchronized Swimming is contested solely by female athletes.

While the beauty, grace, and skill involved are fascinating to see, there's something about watching the world's greatest fighters kick each other in the head which ensures that Olympic Taekwondo remains an extremely popular event. The ExCeL centre in London will provide the backdrop for 2012's Taekwondo competition. While the art originated in Korea, the sport has become popular worldwide for its excitement, so expect to see sellout crowds.

Olympic Triathlon is one of the most popular sports at the Games for the simple reason that it demands so much from its athletes: they must not only excel in one area of sport, but be world-class cyclists, runners, and swimmers. In the Triathlon, athletes move from one sport to the next relentlessly, providing viewers with edge-of-the-seat thrills and non-stop excitement. At London 2012, 110 triathletes compete in beautiful, historic Hyde Park. Olympic Water Polo started off more than a century ago as a wetter version of rugby, and has kept much of its land-based cousin's excitement. In Olympic Water Polo, two teams of seven athletes face each other in a pool, attempting to score on each other's goal while protecting their own. The game is demanding of its athletes, requiring each team to train hard and fill its roster with only the best in the sport if they want a chance at Olympic gold. At the Summer Games, the sport will be contested in a brand-new, cutting-edge facility specifically designed for Olympic Water Polo. From 29 July to 12 August, the Water Polo Arena will bear witness to some of the most exciting, incredible play in the history of the sport as athletes converge from across the world to compete.

With 18 medal events taking place at ExCeL amongst nearly 350 athletes, the 2700-year-old sport of Wrestling is well represented at the 2012 Summer Games.

Athletics [ Track and Field ]
    Image : telegraph.co.uk
Track and Field: the ancient sport of running, jumping, and throwing things. These are the most primeval ways in which an athlete can prove him or herself--the various related sports have remained almost unchanged singe the very first Olympics among the ancient Greeks. The cold measurements of distance, height, and time are struggled against by heroic athletes from across the world, each spending their lives trying to add or subtract tiny fractions of a second or meter in the pursuit of glory. Running has been present since the very first incarnations of the Olympics--in fact, it was the only event. Like in the ancient stadion race, today's Olympic track and field runners are largely sprinters, taking part in 100 meter, 200 meter, and 400 meter dashes. Longer runs take place in the middle distance track events: 800 meter, 1500 meter, and one-mile runs. For those whose skill lies in their endurance, there are 3, 5, and 10-kilometer races. Relay races (the ones with a baton) and hurdling (jumping over obstacles) also take place. At the 2012 Olympics, visiting athletes in the Track and Field events will also test their ability to soar through the air in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump categories, as well as in the fascinating, exhilirating pole vault competition. Athletes may also echo the iconically Olympian statue of the Discobolus, or discus throw, by participating in any of the throwing events: javelin throw, hammer throw, shot put, and the ancient sport of discus throwing itself.

    Basketball
    Image : ACTION
Olympic Basketball has provided some of the most thrilling moments in the history of the Games. Most prominent, of course, is the "Dream Team" which dominated the 1992 Games: with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, and Charles Barkley on the US men's basketball team utterly destroyed its opponents, winning by an average of 43.8 points every game. Of the Dream Team's 12 players and 4 coaches, all but two would go on to become members of the NBA Hall of Fame. Since then, Olympic hockey has provided fans with the opportunity to see amazing, dramatic games and some of the best playing in the world, bar none.

Basketball as played in the Olympics is very similar to NBA basketball: two teams consisting of five players attempt to throw a ball through the opposing team's net. To move with the ball, players must bounce and catch it; to run while holding the ball is called "traveling" and results in a penalty. Olympic and international basketball, as opposed to NBA basketball, is played in four quarters of ten minutes apiece, leading to a more fast-paced game.

Olympic Diving and its eight different events (four each for men and women) emphasize grace, acrobatic skill, and intense body control, resulting in a sporting event which has more in common with dance or gymnastics than speed or strength-based sports. Olympic divers are world-class athletes, hurling themselves from heights of up to thirty feet, spinning gracefully in the air, and then slipping into the water with barely a splash. The Aquatics Centre at Olympic Park will be hosting, among other sports, all diving events. In this beautiful new facility, designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, spectators will watch as the world's greatest divers compete for gold-medal glory.

    Fencing
    Image : olympics.org.uk
Fencing, as practiced at the Summer Games, offers spectators a thrill somewhere between the Three Musketeers and Star Wars: athletes compete in a fast-paced duel to strike each other with electronic swords in an event which, since its origins hundreds of years ago, has metamorphosed from deadly duel to fast-paced competitive sport. Modern fencing takes place across several events, separated by gender and by the type of sword used. With the Foil and the Epee, fencers attempt to jab their opponent with the tip of the sword. With the Sabre, competitors may score points with the edge of the blade. Multiply this by individual and team events, and the 2012 Olympics will have a huge amount of world-class fencing excitement for the true enthusiast.

Olympic Gymnastics have been emblematic of the Summer Olympics since the sport was contested at the very first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The rings, the pommel horse, the soaring and flipping of near-superhuman athletes: gymnastics means excitement, drama, and thrills!

At the Olympics, the sport of Gymnastics is divided into three distinct categories: Rhythmic, Artistic, and Trampoline. Trampoline Gymnastics, as one might imagine, take place on a trampoline. Rhythmic gymnastics is a women-only discipline which combines traditional gymnastics with dance, performing short routines to music with various hand-held objects. Artistic gymnastics is the classic version of the sport, in which participants compete, without accessories, on a variety of surfaces, including vaults, rings, and pommel horses.

    Summer Olympics 2012 London
    Weightlifting
    Image : Rt.com
Olympic Weightlifting is one of the most incredible examples of what athletes are capable of. Sure, excellence at swimming, basketball, or shot put is impressive, but there's something about a competitor lifting the equivalent of a small automobile over his or her head which really boggles one's mind at the heights to which hard work and dedication can take an athlete. It is this incredible spectacle which makes weightlifting events some of the most popular at the Summer Games. At London 2012, 15 medal events will be contested. Athletes are put in groups based on their gender, then further segregated by body weight. Competitors then attempt to lift the most weight out of their particular group. The simplicity of this event means that not only is it quickly understood by newcomers to the sport, it is perfect for children and families who may not follow a more complicated event as easily.
