Boeing's largest plane, the 747 has been an icon in the sky for just over 40 years.
And now, Reuters is reporting that the first copy of the latest and greatest version, the 747-8 Intercontinental, has been delivered to a secret VIP customer.
Boeing has not identified the customer for the plane, but typically customers for jets like this are heads of state or multimillionaires.
While the VIP buyer has not been unveiled, it is known that the Secret Service is searching for a replacement for the current planes that are serving as Air Force One. According to Aviation Week, Boeing is the only bidder to replace Air Force One and the 747-8 is one of the planes they are touting.
So far, Boeing has orders for 36 of the 747-8. Twenty of these are from German carrier Lufthansa while nine orders are coming from similar VIP customers. Delivery dates have not been set for Lufthansa to receive its first plane.
Deliveries of the Intercontinental were supposed to start over 12 months ago, but like the 787, there have been a number of production delays.
This 747-8 is now off to Hamburg to be outfitted with a bespoke interior. Reuters says that it is expected to take an additional two years before the interior is complete.
