F1 2012 SEASON
For buy F1 Grand Prix Tickets
When the F1 World Championship first came to Australia in 1985 it was based in Adelaide with an end-of-season slot. However, ex-racer Bob Jane, and premier of Victoria State Jeff Kennett were determined to improve the profile of Melbourne's motorsport. In 1993 a contract as signed to move the race to Melbourne's Albert Park once the Adelaide contract expired. In 1996 Albert Park opened the F1 season much to the delight of drivers and fans.
Albert Park circuit is a temporary installation, set in a beautiful park around a huge lake just to the south of Melbourne city centre. It has now become the favourite as season opener, not least because of its warm weather and picturesque surroundings. The track makes use of existing roads surrounding the lake but is a notably smooth surface for a street circuit. The circuit is relatively fast, with 16 turns combining a good number of high and low-speed corners, as well as a couple of chicanes and over-taking areas in the brake zones. The terrain around the circuit is flat and open, so many spectators prefer the guaranteed views from a grandstead seat. Either way, Melbourne can be hot in the early months of the year and so adequate sun protection is recommended.

SEPANG CIRCUIT PROFILE
Malaysia has long had ambitions to join the countries hosting international motor sport and the country now has a circuit worthy of hosting both the F1 and FIM Motorcycle Grand Prix and one which raises the standards for all other circuits. It was designed and built by the same German company responsible for redeveloping the A1-Ring and the Nurburgring. Thought to have cost £50 million, it was built in just 14 months - at one stage 2500 workers were on site.
The result is a futuristic blend of stainless steel and glass-fronted buldings and an impressive double-sided main grandstand capable of seating 50,000 spectators. It has been designed to encourage overtaking, being very wide and containing at least four slow corners following long straights. The other 10 corners are medium-to high-speed and top speeds of over 180 mph are predicted. The surrounding 2,300 acre Gateway Park will contain a hotel complex, shopping centre, a golf course and other sports facilities and a theme park.
The Formula 1 race track has an overall length of 5.451,24 m and includes 7 left and 7 right turns. The longest straight runs parallel to the Dragster track between the turns T 13 and T 14 and has a length of 1.175 m. The standard width of the track is between 13 m and 15 m, in turns it expands up to 20 m (turn T 13). Further unique characteristics of the track layout are turns with snail-like narrowing (turn T 1 to T 3), turns with snail-like expansion (turn T 10 to T 12) and two pointed turns (turn T 5 and turn T 13).
The axis of the race track is at its lowest point on + 4.50 m above sea level, the highest point in turn T 2 is on + 11.24 m above sea level. The maximum upward slope amounts to 3%, the maximum downward slope to 8%, the transverse downward slope of the roadway is 2.5%. The combination of turns and straight lines, combined with the rising and falling of the gradient permits top speed up to 327 km/h on the longest straight line (between T 12 and T 13) and a deceleration to 87 km/h is required in close turns. The constant change between acceleration and deceleration parts, connected by high speed sections represents a challenge in driving, offers sufficient opportunities for overtaking manoeuvres and achieves an intensive and tensionful experience of motor sport for the spectators.
CIRCUIT DE SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS PROFILE
Designed by the renowned consultancy Tilke & Partners, the Bahrain International Circuit is specifically designed for Formula 1 and world-class motorsport events. This purpose-built circuit was the first of its kind in the Middle East and arguably the most advanced in the world.
There are six potential track layouts within the complex consisting of an inner track for testing, club events, and an outer track for all classes of racing, incentive events, and heavy-duty testing. The F1 track itself consists of 14 main turns of different widths to provide varied racing lines. Over-taking was also taken into consideration with at least three hot-spots on the track. The circuit was designed for the benefit of the spectator and boasts 50,000 grandstand seats with high quality views. Together, with the VIP viewing tower, hospitality suites, a media centre, merchandising areas, helicopter and light aircraft landing facilities, excellent road access and parking, it all adds up to a truly amazing and state-of-the-art Grand Prix experience.
Inaugurated two weeks before its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in September 1991, the Catalunya circuit near Barcelona has proved to be one of the best-designed circuits of the recent era. It is well-liked by most drivers and so has retained the privilege of hosting the Spanish Grand Prix ever since.
The track is a modern circuit with 8 right-hand and 5 left-hand corners. It includes 3 magnificent sweeping, fast curves, and 2 long, power-sapping straights. There are also two heavy braking areas where F1 cars go from 6th down to 3rd gear. Catalunya is now favoured by most F1 teams for winter testing, which has received some criticism that teams are over-familiar with the circuit. But this fantastic circuit, renowned for its varying winds that cut across the track, never fails to disappoint sell-out crowds and being on the doorstep of one of Europe's great cultural cities helps to make it a favourite on the F1 calendar.
Created in 1929 by Anthony Noghes, president and founder of the Club Automobile of Monaco, to bring international motor sport to Monaco. The first GP was held there in 1929; it was on the calendar for the first year (1950) of the Formula One World Champonship, and has hosted a round every year since 1955.
Despite the difficult working conditions for the teams, and the unforgiving nature of the track for drivers and cars alike, the Monaco Grand Prix is seen as a Jewel in the Crown of the Formula One World Championship racing. The circuit twists and turns through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and along the harbour front. The track layout has not changed essentially since 1929, but in 1973 the new "Piscine" section was added around the seafront swimming-pool, and three chicanes have been added over the years. It imposes enormous strains on both drivers and cars - in 1996 only 3 cars finished! Because of its demanding nature, Monaco usually produces memorable races, but spectating is limited to small glimpses from grandstand or hotel balconies. Monaco has seen many great unexpected victories - Stirling Moss in a privateer Lotus beating the works Ferraris in 1961, for example.
In 1978 the Grand Prix of Canada came to Montreal, where it was run on a man-made island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, the site of the 1967 Expo and the 1976 Summer Olympic Games.
In 1982 the circuit was renamed in honour of Gilles Villeneuve, the very popular Canadian driver, who died during practice for the Belgium GP that year and who had won the first F1 race held on the Ile Notre Dame circuit in 1978. Because of its excellent infrastructure, it is a popular event on the Formula One calendar. It is a mix of slow and rapid corners with a very long straight which demands a lot of the engines. However, its layout is popular with drivers because it is one of the few GP tracks where overtaking is possible, and the annual stopover in Canada remains one of the most popular with the F1 circus. The track has been modified a several times in the past, involving minor reprofiling of some corners on safety grounds.
After the Second World War, England's existing circuits had fallen into disrepair. And so, on the site of a wartime airfield, Silverstone Circuit was developed by the Royal Automobile Club. At the inception of the F1 World Championship in 1950, Silverstone hosted the very first round.
The area is very flat mainly consisting of a series of long straights connected by fast, open corners. In more recent years, a number of modifications have been made to the corners around the Grand Prix circuit to add extra interest, and more overtaking and viewing points. The Becketts/maggots complex is rated among the best corners of any circuit. The owners, the British Racing Drivers Club, have invested heavily in the pit and paddock facilities and the grandstands and spectator areas. There are two smaller track layouts used for national racing. For Formula 1, it has been much modified to slow cars down to safe limits, but this has been done without adding chicanes. Over the winter of 1998/99, an impressive new BRDC Clubhouse was built on the inside of Woodcote corner.
The first F1 race on the Hockenheimring circuit was held in 1970. It featured a dramatic finish, as Jochen Rindt drove his Lotus home, a nose in front of Jacky Ickx's Ferrari. However, the circuit lacked character; it was basically a high-speed race through the forest, interrupted slightly by three chicanes, and was very hard on engines.
The race returned to Hockenheim in 1977, in response to the drivers not wishing to race at the Nurburgring, following Niki Lauder's near fatal accident in 1976. Lauder, ironically enough, won the 1977 race. The track was modified after the 2001 event, which was won by Michael Schumacher and the overall length was drastically reduced. For 2002, the circuit's 70th anniversary, there was a new look and a new name, the "Hockenheimring Baden Wurttemberg". The popular long straights through the woods are now gone with new parts taking their place. Where the circuit once went into the woods there is now a sharp right turn into the extremely long high speed "Parabolika" left turn. The result is a hairpin to be driven with maximum steering in first gear. After this huge corner there is now a right-left-right-again turning into the famous Motodrom with the unique stadium atmosphere. To compensate for the shorter course, the number of laps increased from 45 to 67. Michael Schumacher was once again the winner, thrilling his home fans once more.
Built in 1985 in just 8 months, a few kilometres north-east of the Hungarian capital Budapest under the impetus of Bernie Ecclestone who wanted an Eastern European venue for the F1 Championship. The track is in a huge 110 hectre natural valley, surrounded by 50 hectres of rolling hillside.
With this exceptional natural advantage - being situated in a natural amphitheatre - almost 70 percent of the racetrack is visible from any point. It is called "The Shallow Plate" because the spectators watch the race sitting around the rim of an imaginary plate. The F1 event is always well attended by local fans, as well as by many Germans and Austrians, and in recent years by the many followers of Mika HÃkkinen. The constantly improving and reconstructed circuit, with its excellent infrastructure, meets the strictest requirements for F1 racing. It is praised by the FOM and FIA who host local car and bike races. It is a popular venue for testing as well as for incentive events. The Hungaroring Circuit meets the highest technical requirements and has became one of the safest race tracks in the world. It is not only the landscape and the safety that make the circuit popular, but the proximity to a metropolis with its hotels, restaurants and pleasure-grounds where tourists, drivers and the teams will be able to enjoy themselves.

CIRCUIT DE SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS PROFILE
Spa-Franchorchamps circuit was conceived in 1921 to host the Belgium Motorcycle Grand Prix. Its creators, using public roads twisting and turning through the Ardennes hills, produced a truly majestic 8-mile road course which was both respected and feared by all who drove on it. The track was redeveloped in 1983 and although the new circuit is only half its original length, it retains much of its previous character and charm.
Considered by many to be the best circuit on the F1 calendar, Spa has the longest lap length of all, and is certainly one of the most scenically beautiful, surrounded by wooded hills and small farms. It is also renowned for its changeable weather; it is not unknown for one half of the track to be streaming wet and the other under hot, blue skies. Despite using public roads for half its length, Spa is used most weekends and on many weekdays for practice and testing. As well as the Belgian Grand Prix, it also famously hosts a 24 Hour Saloon car race. Some doubts hang over its future as a GP track because of internal governmental problems and the question of tobacco sponsorship.

AUTODROMO NAZIONALE DI MONZA PROFILE
Built in 1922 in only 100 days by the Automobile Club of Milan, Monza is Europes oldest permanent circuits still in use. Orginally comprising both a road course and a banked oval, sometimes combined for major races until the 1960s, only the road course is used today. The impressive banking still exists, but there are now plans to demolish this historic structure.
Set in a former Royal park on the outskirts of Milan, Italys second major city, the contemporary circuit is still one of the fastest in Europe being a series of long, straight flat-out blasts and long high-speed corners, interrupted only by the inevitable chicanes. Altough it survives more or less in its original layout, the track was used as a military vehicle park during World War II and suffered extensive damage through bombing. The banking in particular required reconstruction before being used again in 1948. All manner of circuit combinations were used in the 1930s and curiously this included the early use of chicanes. Well worth a visit just to experience the enthusiasm of the famous "tifosi".

SINGAPORE STREET CIRCUIT PROFILE
The F1 Singapore Grand Prix was the first street race in Asia and the first ever Formula 1 night race.
Set against the backdrop of downtown Singapore, drivers and spectators alike will get a glimpse of the exotic garden city as the circuit winds past an intriguing blend of historic landmarks such as the City Hall and modern-day buildings such as the iconic Esplanade. All eyes will be on the technically challenging circuit that will test drivers and their cars as they are likely to reach a maximum speed in excess of 300 km per hour. A new 1.2km road that forms eastern section of the circuit was constructed alongside the pit building. With strategically located grandstands and hospitality suites, spectators will be assured of a great view of the action and an unforgettable F1 experience.

SUZUKA INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT PROFILE
Designed by John Hugenholtz, the Zandvoort owner, and built in 1963, primarily as a test track for Honda, Suzuka has hosted the Japanese F1 GP since 1987 and is a very popular venue. The Japanese crowds are fanatical, particularly in the late 80´s and early 90´s when McLaren-Honda, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost were at their peak. Always near the end of the F1 Championship calendar, it has been the scene of many memorable moments in recent racing history to decide the Championship.
The facilities and organisation are first-class. The track is a very technical one to drive and consists of a good variety of corners, then the return section is a series of sweeping, fast curves, where drivers experience high G-forces. Its unique feature is the cross-over which means that, unusually, there is an almost equal number of left- and right-hand turns. At nearly 6 km in length, it is one of the longest tracks on the international calendar. The annual international GT/Sportscar 1000km race is usually held in mid-summer when drivers often have trouble coping with the immense heat.

YAS MARINA CIRCUIT PROFILE
The Yas Marina Circuit is situated on Yas Island around 30 minutes from Abu Dhabi. The circuit hosted its first Grand Prix on the 1st November 2009. It was the first circuit to host a Formula 1 twilight race using floodlights to illuminate the circuit to ensure a seamless transition from day to night.
The circuit is one of the few venues to run in an anti-clockwise direction. With top speeds of 320 km/h, it consists of 20 corners, made up of 9 right turns and 11 left turns which twist through the man-made island, passing along the marina and under the 5-star Yas Marina Hotel.

INTERLAGOS CIRCUIT PROFILE
Although the Grand Prix of Sao Paulo has taken place since 1936, the Interlagos circuit was not built until 1940, and only acquired internatonal fame when it was redeveloped in the early 70s, when it became the host circuit for the Brazilian Grand Prix from 1972 to 1980.
The Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, situated within a suburb of Sao Paulo, the home town of Ayrton Senna, at a time when the great Brazilian driver was a consecutive world champion and a national hero. It has hosted the F1 GP since 1990 and now looks set to be the only Grand Prix held in South America. A technically challenging circuit for drivers, and very bumpy in parts, it makes great demands on suspensions. The many corners are a great test of transmissions. The bumps, the long left-hander leading on to start-finish line and the fact that this track runs counter-clockwise, make it very tiring for drivers.
