Van Cleef and Arpels are to take part in the luxury charity auction, Only Watch, in September 2011 in Monaco; they will donate a unique Poetic Complication timepiece that was inspired by From the Earth To the Moon, by Jules Verne.
The Only Watch auction is held under the High Patronage of H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco and this is the third time the luxury jewelry maker has been asked to participate in the auction which is organized by the Monegasque Association, which researches muscular dystrophy. Funds collected from this luxury auction will be distributed between partners financing 90 researchers along with clinicians in more than five different countries. The auction is to be held at one of the very best yacht shows in the world, the Monaco Yacht Show.
Van Cleef & Arpels designed the bespoke Poetic Complication watch for the auction, so it is an exceptional and rare timepiece that relays the philosophy of the luxury watchmaker. Each of the timepieces designed tells a story and inspires dreams. The theme of Les Voyages Extraordinaires by Jules Verne has been the inspiration for timepieces of the VB. In 1865 the French novelist anticipated space travel, which eventually took place during the 1950s. In these luxury designs Van Cleef & Arpels have created a sky that is dotted with planets and stars which are made of fine gemstones and champlevé enamel. This is an ancient technique relying on the metal objects surface being hollowed out to form compartments which are then filled with colored enamel. The moon along with the rocket, are engraved by hand on to the dial.
For this design a retrograde movement was chosen. This is a marvel of the VB in regards to precision watch making, allowing both hands to travel 120 degree arc of a circle on the dial of the watch and then return to the point where they started. On the right hand side there is a space rocket from the imagination of Jules Verne, which travels towards the moon from the top to the bottom and indicates minutes from zero to sixty. On the left side there is a star that shows hours from zero to twelve, bottom to the top.
This luxury timepiece has planets and stars which are repeated on the bezel, and motifs are engraved and adorned thanks to translucid enamel. The case of the watch is made from white gold and comes with a strap of alligator leather in black. From the Earth to the Moon is a superb demonstration of the expertise and creative ability of Van Cleef & Arpels.
